Time Capsule Secrets

Michael Eisner, Roy Disney, and Mickey Mouse celebrate Disneyland's 40th anniversary with a time capsule. (Photo courtesy of Frank Anzalone)On July 17, 1995, a time capsule -- referred to as a "time castle" -- was sealed and buried in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Making the time capsule special for the 40th anniversary, Disney had invited many of their present and former stars and various Disney executives to place items into the capsule.   Some of the 62 items include:

  • A "40 Years of Adventures" cast member nametag, with the name "Mickey"
  • Early photos of Disneyland
  • An aerial photo of the Disneyland resort
  • Various Disney logo merchandise from 1995
  • Photos and documentation of the just completed Disneyland attraction, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye
  • A 1995 Disney press kit, and a copy of "Disney Magazine"
  • A scroll of thoughts and quotes from Michael Eisner, Roy Disney, Marty Sklar, and others.

Mickey Mouse helps Disneyland workers lower the time capsule into the ground in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. (Photo courtesy of Frank Anzalone)The time castle is located in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle.  Marking the spot is a plaque reading, "Placed beneath this marker on July 17, 1995 - THE DISNEYLAND 40TH ANNIVERSARY TIME CASTLE. A Time Castle containing Disneyland memories, messages and milestones, lies beneath this spot. The Disneyland Time Castle is dedicated to the children of the 21st century, who may unlock its contents on the 80th Anniversary of Disneyland: July 17, 2035."

Disneyland's 40th anniversary was heavily attended, and the time castle ceremony is well documented on various websites.  One writer states that the time castle shown in the photo above is not what is actually buried in front of Sleepy Beauty's Castle, and that the actual time capsule that was buried -- perhaps at night after the crowds had left -- is a large generic barrel, which would probably be more appropriate for a time capsule that needs to last for 50 years.

The time castle is scheduled to be opened in 50 years, on July 17, 2045.
