Our Past Presidents
Welcome to Oglethorpe. After spending time here on our “virtual campus,” I hope you come to visit us in person. You'll find not only an exceptionally beautiful campus, but also an extraordinarily special community.
I am nearing a decade as President of Oglethorpe. One of the major themes of my leadership of our university is the belief that students learn most effectively when they are able to connect superlative classroom learning to relevant real-world experience. There is not a better place in the world to combine theory and practice than Atlanta. In 2013, we strengthened this effort with the launch of our Atlanta Laboratory for Learning (A_LAB)—a place where students can map their four-year journey of experiences complementing their classroom learning. The A_LAB offers opportunities for gaining experience through study abroad and other global education, civic engagement, career development and internships, and undergraduate research and scholarship.
We have expanded our study abroad programs so that our students can spend a few weeks, a semester, or a year at one of our two dozen international higher education partner universities or by participating in Oglethorpe programs taught by Oglethorpe faculty in South Africa, Greece, and in Rome in Oglethorpe’s signature GO: Rome program.
Our faculty has also developed a new program in non-profit management, with a significant work experience component. Every student at Oglethorpe, no matter what his or her discipline, is now able to complete one or more internships in his or her field of interest.
Having the opportunity to gain real world work experience while in college gives Oglethorpe students an important competitive advantage. Our new Latin American study program has recently taken students to Spain, Guatemala and Cuba. Even our men's basketball team traveled several times to compete in Costa Rica.
Oglethorpe's motto is "make a life, make a living, make a difference". Some people see these as three separate things. I believe they are all one and the same. You build a good life through being productive with your time, by having your life enriched by your labor, and through making a difference to others by what you chose to do and how you chose to live.
Come visit us when you have the chance. You will be inspired.
