Shakespeare
Olivia’s high school literature teacher, an alumnus of Oglethorpe, spoke of OU with such passion that she had to find out more. She has not been disappointed. “Our professors are not just concerned about deadlines, but ask about satisfaction. Professors are concerned about me.”
Olivia’s excitement is contagious as she describes her day trip to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC. Through OU’s connections, she and her classmates examined folios of works they were reading in class; were able to see scholars at work in the library behind the scene and had the unexpected experience of seeing what lay behind one of the library’s vaults. Olivia is awestruck. “It’s almost like you’re still in the classroom, except you got on a plane and took a trip with your professor and your class to another city, in another state.” Olivia thinks there’s something unexplainable about spending time with your professor and fellow students outside the classroom. “People’s personalities come out and this really creates community.”
An English/Spanish double major, Olivia also participated in the Shakespeare and Performance trip to Oxford, UK. As part of the summer abroad program, Olivia and her classmates studied the plays, attended their performances at Georgia Shakespeare on the Oglethorpe campus and then headed to Oxford. Using that university’s cloistered gardens for their very own performances, professors became their audience. “The classroom mirrors a bigger classroom. You don’t stop learning when you leave Hearst!”
