A Message from the Director:

We know that affordability is one of the biggest considerations when choosing a college. This is why Oglethorpe is committed to offering a variety of strategies and resources to help make the net cost of this remarkable education and experience affordable. More than 90% of Oglethorpe students receive some type of financial aid to help finance their education.

While the financial aid process can seem daunting, the Financial Aid Office at Oglethorpe is willing and able to help you identify and secure the aid for which you are eligible. A college education is a significant investment but one that arguably yields the greatest returns. And in response to your investment, Oglethorpe will reply by providing four years of mentorship by a faculty ranked 15th in the nation by Princeton Review, strong ties to Fortune 500 companies both in and out of Atlanta, community engagement through a campus named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll since 2006, the opportunity to play championship NCAA Division III athletics, and admittance to the most selective graduate schools in the country.

We are eager to assist you and your family throughout the financial aid process. We hope the information on this website is helpful to you. Please contact us if you should have any questions. We look forward to working with you!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What makes up a financial award package?
Oglethorpe creates an overall financial aid package for students offered admission to the university as well as for continuing students. Need-based aid is included for students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An award package will outline all aid components for which you qualify, such as academic scholarships, institutional grants, federal and state grants and loans, and other sources of funds.

How is ''financial need'' determined?
Like all colleges and universities, Oglethorpe uses a formula developed by the federal government to determine your financial need and your expected family contribution (EFC). You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine your financial need. Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, the FAFSA requires you to submit information about family size, income and assets, which are among the factors used to determine your financial need and the size of your aid award.

When should I apply for financial aid?
You should apply as soon as possible after your parents have completed their federal tax returns. FAFSA forms become available every January 1 for the academic year beginning that fall. For freshman applicants, this means that you should begin to work on the FAFSA in the winter of your senior year of high school. Oglethorpe encourages all applicants for financial aid to file the FAFSA by February 15.

When will I receive an award letter?
For new students, financial aid is awarded beginning March 1st and typically arrives at a student's home address within the first two weeks of March. For returning students, financial aid is awarded shortly after commencement in May. Returning students are typically notified of their award letters via email, and the award letters are viewable online through Oasis. Before an award can be made, Oglethorpe must receive your FAFSA results and you must be admitted to the university.

Do I have to reapply each year?
Yes, you must complete the FAFSA to apply for financial aid each year that you want to receive need-based assistance. If your family’s income and financial profile remain similar year to year, you may expect your subsequent financial aid awards to remain similar as well.

Should I complete the FAFSA even if I'm unsure I need financial aid?
Yes. Whether or not you expect to receive federal assistance for college, it is very important that you complete the FAFSA so that Oglethorpe can determine if you are eligible for university-sponsored grants and awards. The FAFSA is also required for most student loans.

Will Georgia's HOPE Scholarship and Zell Miller Scholarship work at Oglethorpe, since it is a private school?
Yes, qualified Georgia residents will receive scholarship funds from the state of Georgia to assist in the cost of attending a private university like Oglethorpe. Full-time students with a HOPE-eligible GPA currently receive $1,854 per semester, full-time students with a Zell Miller-eligible GPA currently receive $2,000 per semester, and qualified GA residents currently receive $350 per semester through the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (GTEG). For more information, visit our Scholarships and Grants pages, or visit www.gacollege411.org.

What about my state-sponsored scholarship if I live outside of Georgia?
Currently, Oglethorpe recognizes the academic achievement of Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Mississippi residents who graduate with a 3.0 or higher with an equivalent grant of $3,500 per year. This award comes directly from Oglethorpe. For more information, visit our Scholarships page.

Where can I go for more information?
Our financial aid staff will be happy to answer any questions and show you how to make Oglethorpe's extraordinary education affordable to you. Please do not hesitate to contact us!
