Quick Tips for the Financial Aid Process
- Apply early - Admitted students are encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by Oglethorpe's priority deadline of Feb. 1 to ensure that they receive full consideration for all the aid for which they are eligible. Although Oglethorpe will continue to receive and process FAFSA information, sooner is always better in the aid process. Even if your family waits to file actual tax returns with the IRS later in the spring, it is advisable to prepare tax return information early and to use that info to complete the FAFSA.
- Enter OU's FAFSA code - Oglethorpe University's Title IV code is 001586. Be sure to enter this code when filing the FAFSA to ensure that Oglethorpe receives your results.
- Ask questions - While it is your responsibility to be informed about your financial aid options, you won't always know all the answers! Rather than worry or wonder, please contact our staff to inquire about the specifics of your eligibility, your award letter, or any other element of financial aid.
- Keep copies - Maintain for your records a copy of all documents referenced or submitted during the financial aid process. This will prove invaluable should you be selected for verification, should your circumstances change, or should a question arise later on during enrollment.
- Double-check your SSN - Because the FAFSA process works by matching your Social Security Number (SSN) between Dept. of Education records and those of Oglethorpe, an error in even one digit of your SSN can delay your financial award processing and notification.
