Math Placement Tests

Have you completed other important enrollment steps such as the housing application, immunization and
health history forms, and a final transcript request? Visit the
Next Steps page or view the enrollment timeline
to make sure you are aware of important to-do's and deadlines this spring and summer.

BEFORE PASSPORT
All students should complete the following items as soon as possible, or by your OU Passport date.

Language Placement - ALL entering students should take a language placement test. If you have ever studied French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, then you must take the language placement test, which is web-based and available to you any time, anywhere. (Oglethorpe will offer Elementary Latin in academic year 2013-14, but there is not a required placement test at this time.) More information and FAQs about placement tests are avaiilable via the links above. If you do not complete the appropriate placement test(s), you will be more limited in registering for foreign language coursework.

Math Placement - SOME new students must also take a math placement test. If your intended major is in business, economics, accounting, science, or math, then you must take the math placement test, which is only offered on campus. Local Atlanta students are expected to come to campus in May to take the math placement test, while out-of-town students may do math placement on the day of OU Passport. If you do not complete the Accuplacer placement test and your intended major requires it, you will be prevented from registering for certain courses.

Weekday afternoon proctoring will be offered at 4 p.m. Mon. 5/20, Wed. 5/22, Tues. 5/28, Thurs. 5/30, Tues. 6/11, Wed. 6/19, and Tues. 7/9. OU Passport proctoring will be offered at 8:30 a.m. on each program date, 6/7, 6/28, and 7/19. You should sign up online for your proctoring date.

During the summer, Oglethorpe also offers an Intensive Math Option (IMO) for intended science majors to jumpstart their college mathematics sequencing. Once you have completed the Accuplacer placement test, you may wish to consider one of these condensed offerings of MAT-120 or MAT-130 during the month of July. More details about IMO are available online through the “next steps” web page, and it will also be discussed at the June Passport sessions.

Petrel Pass Photo - All Oglethorpe students receive a "Petrel Pass," your official student ID card which serves many functions on campus. You may have an ID photo taken during OU Passport, or you may submit your own photo in advance of attending Passport this summer. The photo must be a direct head shot of you (no other people in the photo), and you should not be wearing a hat, sunglasses, etc. You may submit your own photo to helpdesk@oglethorpe.edu at least one week before your chosen Passport date if you wish for your card to be prepared and available for pick-up at Passport.

WHAT TO EXPECT
During OU Passport, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities:

Academic Planning - Each student's afternoon will include a small-group meeting with a trained faculty advisor, during which time you will discuss your academic plans and goals, consider courses for the fall and learn more about Oglethorpe's programs of study. During your first semester at OU, you will learn more about declaring your major and meeting with your academic advisor.

Course Registration -  At OU Passport you will also register for your fall classes. By the end of the program, you will have an official course enrollment for fall 2013 which you can view or print any time during the summer.

Auditions and Ensembles - New students interested in the University Singers may request an audition during OU Passport. Auditions will be available on June 7 and June 28, with availability TBD for July 19. Priority will go to out-of-state students for these slots. If you are interested in the OU Winds and instrumental ensembles, there will be an opportunity to meet with the Director of Bands during OU Passport. Please indicate your interest on the RSVP form for either of these musical activities.

Taking Care of Business – Entering students will receive a Petrel Pass, Oglethorpe's student ID card. Staff and students will talk with you about the "real info" which you need to manage your student account, financial aid, and other college records. You will have the opportunity to visit the computer labs to learn more about online resources such as OASIS, Petrelnet, Moodle, and student email. All guests will be able to tour the residence halls and visit the bookstore.

New Friends - OU Passport is a busy day, but it's a great time to meet other Stormy Petrels! Approximately 90-100 students will attend each program, so you will be able to hang out with many of the students whom you will see again in the fall.

Parent Sessions - Parents and guests who attend are invited to learn more about OU during special sessions with academic affairs, current OU parents, representatives from various campus offices and more. Individual appointments will be available for talking with financial aid and business office professionals.

Paying Your Bill - You will receive a copy of your fall 2013 bill during the month of May. All students and families are expected to review the bill and begin to arrange payment prior to OU Passport. Online payment is available for all students. A tuition installment plan is also available by arrangement with the Business Office or online through TMS. Please call (404) 364-8302 to speak with a student accounts specialist about your options. More details are forthcoming soon from the Business Office, including a copy of your fall statement. Watch your OU email!
