Oglethorpe's Theatre Department offers interactive courses in a practical sequence of acting and directing while providing a wide range of opportunities in hands-on production roles. The goal of the theatre program is for students to learn by doing, complementing the very solid academic background provided with knowledge of theatre history, dramatic literature, and an array of special topics courses and practical workshops.
The truly special feature of theatre at Oglethorpe is the opportunity it provides for students to work closely not only with their instructors but also with professional actors, associate artists, and staff of Georgia Shakespeare, the professional theatre company in residence on our campus. Founded and in residence on the campus since 1986, Georgia Shakespeare creates thoughtful and powerful interpretations of a diverse body of work rooted in Shakespeare and branching out to embrace the best writers and ideas of all eras.
Sharing the Conant Center for the Performing Arts on campus, the Oglethorpe theatre department and Georgia Shakespeare work together to provide opportunities for professional artists to hone their craft and students to learn not only from educational professionals but also from working artists.
In addition, our Atlanta location allows us to bring other theatre professionals onto our campus and provides opportunities for students to serve as interns at the various professional theatres in town, as well as Georgia Shakespeare. The result is a rich learning environment that prepares students for an array of professional careers in theatre.
