Men Finish 2nd at Camp Lejeune...Again
Finish as runner ups for the 3rd time in five years at
Paradise Point.
Jacksonville, NC- The Oglethorpe men’s golf
team spotted Johnson and Wales College seventeen strokes after the
first two rounds and couldn’t catch up on day three. The Stormy
Petrels shot a closing 300 and beat Johnson and Wales by five on day
three. Unfortunately, the Petrels were unable to overtake them,
becoming bridesmaids for the third time in recent history.
The Petrels finished second for the second
consecutive year. The 2003 team also finished runner up four years
ago. Oglethorpe won both the 2002 and 2004 Camp Lejeune
Intercollegiate tournaments and the swords hang proudly in Coach
Owen’s office.
Led by senior Joe Green’s four under par 68
Oglethorpe fired a three over par 291, posting an eight stroke lead
on the other fifteen teams on the Golf Course after round one.
Johnson and Wales posted their remarkable 21 under par 259 on the
par 70 Scarlet Course to take a comfortable lead over second place
Guilford College at 276 on the shorter course.
When the teams switched courses Johnson and
Wales was able to match Oglethorpe’s impressive 291 on the Gold
Course but Oglethorpe was only able to post a 276 on the Scarlet
Course and trailed by seventeen.
Senior Joe Green won the individual medalist
with a nine under par 205 after carding rounds of 68-64-73. Senior
Jonathan Davis fired rounds of 74-70-77 for a 221 to finish in the
top 25. Junior Danny Swanick closed with a one over par 73 on the
Gold Course on day three to card rounds of 75-71-73 = 219 and joined
Davis in the top 25.
Sophomore’s Matt Suggett (74-71-77 = 222) and
Taylor Urbanski (76-77-78 = 231) both finished in the top fifty of
the 160 player field.
