Men Finish 2nd at Camp Lejeune...Again

Finish as runner ups for the 3rd time in five years at Paradise Point.

Jacksonville, NC- The Oglethorpe men’s golf team spotted Johnson and Wales College seventeen strokes after the first two rounds and couldn’t catch up on day three. The Stormy Petrels shot a closing 300 and beat Johnson and Wales by five on day three. Unfortunately, the Petrels were unable to overtake them, becoming bridesmaids for the third time in recent history.

The Petrels finished second for the second consecutive year. The 2003 team also finished runner up four years ago. Oglethorpe won both the 2002 and 2004 Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate tournaments and the swords hang proudly in Coach Owen’s office.

Led by senior Joe Green’s four under par 68 Oglethorpe fired a three over par 291, posting an eight stroke lead on the other fifteen teams on the Golf Course after round one. Johnson and Wales posted their remarkable 21 under par 259 on the par 70 Scarlet Course to take a comfortable lead over second place Guilford College at 276 on the shorter course.

When the teams switched courses Johnson and Wales was able to match Oglethorpe’s impressive 291 on the Gold Course but Oglethorpe was only able to post a 276 on the Scarlet Course and trailed by seventeen.
