Petrels Sweep Georgia Cup
Five OU Golfers on Seven Man All State Team
April 10, 2006
The Oglethorpe University Men’s Golf Team won
the Georgia Cup for the sixth consecutive season. The Stormy
Petrels built over a six stroke average per round lead over Emory
University at the end of the fall season in late October and cruised
through the spring season winning by a margin of 7.80 strokes per
round.
The five Stormy Petrels placed all five team
members on the “All State” team for the 2006 season. Oglethorpe has
placed four players on the “All State” team twice before but this is
the first time in the nine year history at the Georgia Cup a team
has had their entire line up earn a spot on the “All State” team.
Senior Joe Green (73.82) edged out teammate
sophomore Taylor Urbanski (74.18) to win the Georgia Cup State
Player of the Year by just a .36 per round stroke average. Green
entered the final tournament leading the scoring race by about a
half stroke over Urbanski and by two each over freshman Joseph Lyda
(75.46) and Josh Kinsey (75.43). Urbanski closed the gap in the
last event but Green prevailed and earned a fourth Georgia Player of
the Year honor for Oglethorpe. Danny Swanick made a late jump from
8th place to 6th place to earn a spot on the
All State Team and give the Stormy Petrels five of the seven All
State members. Swanick’s closing round of 71 moved him up two
places.
