Men Post Solid First Round, Hold in 7th

The #2 ranked Oglethorpe University men's golf team began their quest to record the school's first ever national championship today by posting an excellent opening round on the Chateau Elan Woodlands Course at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships.

Their combined team score of 306 was the best score recorded on the Woodlands Course, as with 35 teams competing, the field will compete on two different courses in the tournaments opening two rounds. The 306 is good for a team score of  22 over par and 7th place overall in the Championships.

The top six schools, however, played on the substantially more forgiving Resort Course today, so tomorrow's finishing results will be much more telling of how the teams actually stand. Tournament leader, the University of La Verne, shot a 6 over par 290 on the Resort Course today to hold an 11-stroke tournament lead on second place Skidmore College.

Methodist University, the #1 ranked team in the country, competed on the Woodlands Course today along with Oglethorpe and shot a 27 over par 311 and trails the Stormy Petrels by five strokes.

Oglethorpe tees off tomorrow on the Chateau Elan Resort Course in the early morning time slot from 7:30 - 8:00 a.m.
