Men's Golf Set to Host at Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club
The Stormy Petrel road warriors finally get a home tournament after a busy stretch on the road playing in three tournaments in three weeks in three different states. Oglethorpe will host the 3rd Annual Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational in beautiful Chestnut Mountain, GA October 19-21.
The Petrels opened the season with a win at the Rhodes Fall Invitational at Tunica National Golf resort in Mississippi. They next traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Greensboro Invitational at Bryan Park where they finished strong on the final day, but a second consecutive come from behind win was stalled by #1 ranked Huntingdon College's fine play.
The team is on the road again this weekend in Fredericksburg, Virginia , outside Washington DC, for The Gordin Collegiate Classic. The Gordin invites the nation's top 12 teams to a great setting at Cannon Ridge Golf Course for one of the top tournaments of the year. The Stormy Petrels are competing in their 9th consecutive Gordin Collegiate and better yet are the DEFENDING CHAMPIONS at the event this year. Oglethorpe junior Scott Pugh returns as the individual medalist.
The Petrels will soar back to Atlanta and Royal Lakes always one of the favorite tournaments of the Fall Golf Season. Royal Lakes will host the Fall Invitational on its 6,935 yard- Par 71 picturesque, challenging layout. The fieldof ten teams from seven different states and two Oglethorpe teams will feature six of the TOP 11 teams in the October 8th GOLFSTAT rankings. #1 ranked Huntingdon College and #3 ranked Guilford College willbattle with fourth ranked Oglethorpein the same pairing beginning at approximately 9am on Monday morning. #8 ranked Rhodes College, #10 LaGrange and number 11 Greensboro College give the event six of the nations top teams. Piedmont at #18, Central,Iowa ranked #24 and Emory at #25 bring the total to nine of the TOP 25 teams in the nation all gathering at Royal Lakes.
Oglethorpe will be without their number one player Olafur Loftsson, who is representing Iceland, his home country, in the 2008 World Cup Amateur Championship in Australia for the next two weeks. The tremendous depth the Stormy Petrels have showcased in all of their tournaments to date will be tested at both The Gordin Collegiate this weekend in Virginia and in Atlanta at Royal Lakes.
The Petrels will be looking to break their two year hold on second place in the fall event they host. Last October, Guilford College came from behind by posting a tournament record six under par 278 team score to erase an Oglethorpe first round lead to win by just two strokes. In 2006, Methodist University won the inaugural Royal Lakes event beating the host Petrels by eight.
