Oglethorpe Wins 7th Consecutive Georgia Cup
In the season long Georgia Cup competition, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, who trailed in the Cup standings through the Callaway Garden Tournament in early March, came from behind with three great finishes and won their 7th consecutive cup.
Oglethorpe’s adjusted scoring average of 298.43 was just under Emory’s 301.14 and LaGrange College’s 303.03. Piedmont College finished fourth in the standings at 320.77.
Oglethorpe finished second at the Jekyll Island Collegiate in late March, won the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate the next week and finished third in Emory’s Spring Invitational at Smoke Rise Golf Club in Stone Mountain in early April. Emory’s Invitational ends the college golf regular season and is the Georgia Cup’s final tournament as well.
Oglethorpe won the inaugural cup in 1998 and then Emory won the next two in 1999 and 2000. Since then, the Stormy Petrels have won the next seven in a row beginning in 2001 and including this April’s win.
