Oglethorpe Alumnus Trent Erb Makes Professional Golf Debut

ATLANTA - In his first event on the NGA/Hooters Professional Golf Tour over the weekend, Oglethorpe University alumnus Trent Erb finished 56th in The Michelob Ultra Classic in Owasso, Okla. Erb, who graduated from Oglethorpe in May, fought his way back from five over par on his first three professional golf holes to finish the tournament one under par, earning nearly $1,000 for the week and making the cut from a field of 161 players.

While playing golf for Oglethorpe's Stormy Petrels, Erb was a two-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a 2003 Division III PING All-America First Team selection. In July, he was named to the United States team for the 2004 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The NGA/Hooters Tour is a developmental tour for rising golf stars and is one step below the Nationwide Tour, which is receiving television coverage on the Golf Channel. Erb next travels to Miami, Okla., for the Buffalo Run Casino Classic scheduled for Aug. 12-15. He returns to Georgia for the Langdale Ford Championship in Valdosta, Sept. 16-19.

Oglethorpe Golfer Named to U.S. Team for U.S. vs. Japan Matches

Oglethorpe's Trent Erb to compete July 13-16 in Chiba, Japan

ATLANTA -  The Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) recently named the United States Team for the 2004 Fuji Xerox U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship.   The 12-member squad will consist of eight men's and four women's collegiate players. The event will be held July 13-16 at Taiheiyou Club Ichihara Course in Chiba, Japan.

Trent Erb of Oglethorpe is among the eight collegiate players named to the team.

A senior from Athens, Ga., Erb is the two-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a 2003 Division III PING All-America selection. The only NCAA Division III player selected for the Team USA, Erb will represent his division in the U.S. vs. Japan matches.

Additional men selected for the U.S. Team include Kentucky's John Holmes, J.J. Jakovac of Chico State, Colorado State's Nolan Martin, Indiana's Jeff Overton, Michael Putnam of Pepperdine, Minnesota's Justin Smith and Peter Tomasulo of California comprise the men's portion of the team.

The women's team consists of Kailin Downs of New Mexico, Duke's Anna Grzebien, UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas and Brooke Tull of TCU.

Team USA leads all-time U.S.A. vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship series, 21-7, and has won eight-straight competitions.

Golf Team Wins Camp Lejeune . . . Again

Erb's 64, Green's 65 and Garner's 66 in the second round put OU in position to win

Once is not enough when it comes to winning the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate.  Two years ago to the day the Oglethorpe squad, then led by senior Robert Fink and juniors Robert Miller and Chris Summers won the coveted Military sword and shield to join the list of champions in the circle of honor.

The Stormy Petrel men's golfers fired a school record 16 under par 264 on the par 70 Scarlet Course at Paradise Point Golf Course on the Marine Military base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  Oglethorpe held the first round lead on the par 72 Gold Course with a five over par 293 opening round.

The Petrels trailed Rhodes College by five after the 36 holes and were poised to make another Sunday final day finish at Camp Lejeune.  During the past four years the Stormy Petrels have put together incredible Sunday finishes that earned them the third place trophy in 2001, the 1st place sword and shield in 2002, the runner-up trophy in 2003 and this year's come from behind win.

Sophomore Joe Green's one under par 71 on the windblown 7037 yard course kept Methodist College (trailing by three), Barton College (trailing by seven) and Emory University (trailing by ten) chasing Oglethorpe all day.

Green combined with Trent Erb's 74, Danny Swanick's 76 and Jon Davis' 78 for a 299 closing round total to bring home the victory and another set of swords for Oglethorpe.

Individually, Trent Erb's 72-64-74=210 placed him four under par and good for third overall.  Joe Green's 71 was proceeded by rounds of 75-65 for a three day total of 211 good for 5th place.  Corey Garner's 219 was good for 18th.

Garner's Double Eagle Highlights Oglethorpe's Win at Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate

Division III's Oglethorpe University won the 33rd annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate with an even par 856 total edging Division II team Barton College by three strokes.  Carding rounds of 293 on the par 72 Gold Course, 16 under 264 on the par 70 Scarlet Course, and closing with a 299 on the Gold Course, Oglethorpe won the Intercollegiate for the 2nd time in three years.   The 7033 yard Gold Course built a new par 5, 11th hole, with the green out near the river.  In Thursday's (March 25th) practice round freshman Danny Swanick (Tampa, Fla.) with the hole playing at 563, hit a driver - 2 iron that landed just in front of the green and rolled toward the flagstick and hit the flagstick stopping one foot from double eagle.  On Friday (March 26th) in the first round of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate with the hole playing 537 yards, junior Corey Garner hit a six iron from 220 yards that landed on the front edge of the green and began rolling directly at the flagstick.  This time the ball found the bottom of the cup for a double eagle.   Garner knew he had hit it close as the ball rolled toward the flagstick in between the swales in the green.  His playing partner from Piedmont College saw it go in and yelled "It went in!"  Both players looked ahead to the reaction from pro-am partner Sgt. Maj. Milton Bartely.  He motioned that he thought it went over the back.  So the threesome proceeding toward the green unaware they had christened the new hole with a double eagle.  Head Coach Jim Owen standing 100 yards to the left of the green with former Oglethorpe Athletic Director Jack Berkshire and his wife Tomzie could not see the hole but applauded what they thought was an eagle putt opportunity.  Assuming the ball had in fact rolled over the green, the group began looking for the ball.  Piedmont College golfer John Dalton again insisted he had seen the ball go in the cup from the fairway.  The trio then moved toward the cup and amazingly there lay a Titliest pro v1x with his Oglethorpe logo in the bottom of the cup.  The threesome erupted in excitement not only for Garner's amazing feat,  but for the "two" they were going to write on their scorecard in Camp Lejeune's unique best ball pro-am format.   For 33 years the Marine base at Camp Lejeune has hosted this memorable event for collegians.  The first 36 holes are played on two different courses with the collegians playing their own ball and the military personnel playing their ball with their full handicap.  On Saturday night at a banquet held at the Officer's Club on the base awards are given out for the best ball teams.  Despite the double eagle, the team came up short in the best ball. Senior All-American, Trent Erb, and his partner from Piedmont College and retired Sgt. Ron Tipton carded a seven under par 65 on the 7000 yard Gold Course and followed it up with a blistering 17 under par 53 on the much shorter par 70 Scarlet Course to tie for first with a 24 under par total of 118.  On Sunday the event's final 18 holes involved only the collegians and the race for the prestigious authentic Marine swords presented to the winning team from the 32 team field.   Oglethorpe University joins the University of North Carolina, Elon University, Gilford College, Virginia Commonwealth, and Methodist College as the only multiple winners of the Intercollegiate
