DOUGLAS COUNTY DUO MAKE
IMMEDIATE IMPACT AT OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY
Kite leads women's golf team; Tulowitzky
contributes immediately on court
A pair of freshmen from Douglas County High School who enrolled
at Oglethorpe less than four months ago have already made
significant impacts
on their respective teams at Oglethorpe. Both athletes had
impressive resumes during their careers at Douglas County.
Andrew Tulowitzky, who starred for Coach Joby Boydstone at
Douglas County, was the 2003 Douglas County Male Basketball Player
of the Year. He was the Region 4-AAAA Player of the Year and named
2nd Team All-State. Tulowitzky averaged 20.7 ppg, 6 rpg, and over 5
assists per contest for the Tigers. He was a four year captain for
Coach Boydstone, the first four year captain at Douglas County, and
a rarity in high school athletics.
Tulowitzky has started all six contests for the Stormy Petrels
this season. He is averaging 7 ppg, 5 rpg, 4 apg, and playing
almost 34 minutes a game as a freshman. He had a season high eleven
points on November 24th at Shorter College in Rome, GA. "His poise
and intensity are two intangibles he brought with him from high
school and put on display the very first practice," comments Head
Coach Phil Ponder. "He will be a viable candidate for Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Rookie of the Year at the end
of the season," adds Ponder.
Leigh Kite served as team captain for Coach Jill Bryson and was
named All-County as both a junior and senior. She was named Douglas
County Female Golfer of the Year as a senior last year. She led her
team to State Tournament appearances for two consecutive years. In
October the Atlanta Junior Golf Association (AJGA) named her
Sportswoman of the Year for its 2003 Season. At the Grand
Championship of the AJGA, Leigh was honored with the Sportsmanship
Award for the girls 15-18 age group. Kite has played the #1 spot
for the Stormy Petrels women's golf team this fall and led the team
in scoring average at 91.1, playing from the women's collegiate tee
markers, usually over 5800 yards in length.
Kite was the medalist in both dual match victories for the Stormy
Petrel women. She finished tied for 18th at The Coosa Collegiate
Invitational in October and finished 12th at the
Berry/Shorter/Oglethorpe Triangular in September. Head Coach Jim
Owen describes Kite as "the foundation of the women's golf team.
She is the first piece of the puzzle for the future of the
Oglethorpe women's golf program. Our goal for her this year is to
make second team All-SCAC on our home course at PineIsle on Lake
Lanier this April at the SCAC Conference Championship. That would
be a good first step for the first year golf program."
