Brown, Vaughan Selected to Men's and Women's Soccer All-Sportsmanship Teams
Oglethorpe University senior men's soccer player Daniel Brown and and senior women's soccer player Julie Vaughan have been selected as members of the 2008 Men's and Women's Soccer All-Sportsmanship Teams.

The SCAC is placing a special emphasis on sportsmanship this year – asking all fans of the conference to exhibit good sportsmanship at all conference functions throughout the 2008-2009 season.


 
Each head coach was asked to elect one member from his or her team who displayed good sportsmanship throughout the season.
 
Men's head coach Jon Akin and women's head coach Alan Woods will miss the strong leadership qualities both Brown and Vaughan brought to the pitch when they graduate this spring.

Muller, Devault and Komic Selected to All-SCAC Third Team
Oglethorpe University senior midfielder Michael Muller, senior midfielder Scott Devault and senior forward Amel Komic were each selected as members of the 2008 All-SCAC Men's Soccer Third Team earlier this week.

Muller, of Marietta, Georgia, battled through injuries all season long but still manged to be a leader for the Petrels as the team's captain. Despite missing 6 contests with a leg injury, Muller was tied for third on the team in goals scored with 2 for 4 total points. The Petrels will sorely miss his vocal leadership next fall.
 
Devault, a transfer from Woodstock, Georgia, made an immediate imapct upon the SCAC with his arrival. He recorded a whopping 8 assists on the season which was good for 3rd place in the entire conference. In addition, Devault scored 3 goals in 2008 for a total of 14 points on the season.
 
Komic, of Duluth, Georgia, was one of the most prolific scorers in all the SCAC during the 2008 season. He found the back of the net an astonishing 10 times which was good for 4th place in the SCAC. In addition, Komic added 3 assists for a season total of 23 points which was good for 5th place overall in the conference. Needless to say, the Petrels will miss the outstanding services of Muller, Devault and Komic in 2009.

Komic Named SCAC Offensive POTW
Oglethorpe University sophomore forward Amel Komic was named the SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from November 3 to Novemebr 10. Komic, playing for the final time on Salamone Field, recorded four goals and an assist in his final two matches versus Austin and Colorado College.

On Friday against Austin, Komic recorded two goals including the game winner to lift the Petrels. On Sunday versus Colorado College, Komic had a hand in all three of Oglethorpe's goals as he scored two and assisted on another.
 
For the season, Komic led the Petrels in total points with 23 after notching 10 goals and 3 assists in his senior campaign.

Men Top Tigers on Senior Day
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team ended their season in style on Sunday afternoon by defeating the Colorado College Tigers on Salamone Field, 3-1. The Petrels battled through midseason injuries to win five of their final six contests of the season.

The men's soccer program bid farewell to six graduating seniors: Carlos Morochz, Scott Devault, Brett Wooten, Daniel Brown, Amel Komic and Michael Muller.
 
It was freshman James Harter, however, who got the scoring going early for Oglethorpe off an assist from senior Amel Komic. Komic then wrapped a bow around his career by scoring the final two goals from Oglethorpe will recording a 5 point effort in his last fixture on Salamone Field.
 
With the strong close to the season, Oglethorpe finishes with a 7-9-3 overall record and head coach Jon Akin is excited about the upcoming season next fall with a roster loaded with young talent.

Men Race by 'Roos on Salamone Field
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team recorded their second straight victory on Friday afternoon by defeating Austin College on Salamone Field, 4-1.

Freshman Jimmy Harter got the scoring going for the Petrels midway through the first half when he collected a deflected shot off the foot of Michael Muller and found the back of the net.
 
The Petrels then jumped out to a three goal lead on successive goals by senior Amel Komic. On the first, Komic broke away from the pack at midfield to score unassisted; on the second, he took a feed from Scott Devault and headed it past the 'Roos keeper.
 
Senior Carlos Morochz capped the scoring for Oglethorpe after taking a pass from Evan Britton and posting a score with only seven minutes remaining in the contest.
 
With the victory, Oglethorpe is now 6-9-3 on the year and will close out their season on Sunday with Senior Day ceremonies prior to a 12:30 p.m. kick versus Colorado College.

Men Hang "L" on Hawks
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team defeated Huntingdon College on Salamone Field on Saturday afternoon, 2-1. It's the second consecutive win for the Petrels by the same score over non-conference foes.

The Petrels scored the game's first goal with only 5 minutes remaining before half after Scott Devault fed freshman Greyson Surges for a header that beat the Hawks keeper. This was Oglethorpe's third consecutive goal that has been assisted by Devault and scored off of a header.
 
Oglethorpe widened the lead late in the second half when freshman Jimmy Harter won a 50/50 ball and streaked up the pitch to beat all the Hawks defenders for his first career goal in the Oglethorpe gold and black.
 
With the result, Oglethorpe stands at 4-8-3 on the season and will get set to jump back into conference play when they take on Millsaps this Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi.

Men Take Down Lions
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team defeated Piedmont College on Salamone Field on Wednesday afternoon, 2-1. Despite falling behind the Lions by one goal early on, Oglethorpe rallied to tie the match just before half and then take the lead with only seven minutes remaining in the second stanza.

Freshman Aaron Walker headed the first goal home for Oglethorpe off a perfectly struck corner by senior Scott Devault with only 1:16 remaining in the first half. Devault also assisted on the Petrels second goal with a deft chip that senior Amel Komic headed home for the game winner.
 
With the win, Oglethorpe improves to 3-8-3 on the season and will have some time off before facing Huntingdon College on October 25 on Salamone Field.

Lynx Sweep Petrels on the Pitch
The Oglethorpe University men's and women's soccer teams both lost to the Rhodes College Lynx on Salamone Field on Friday afternoon. The men fell by a score of 2-1 and the women hung tough until a bevy of late goals doomed them, 4-0.

Oglethorpe freshman Nathan Post scored his first career goal and the Petrels briefly held a 1-0 advantage in the men's game. The Lynx bounced back with two goals before the half, however, and held off a Petrel push in the second stanza to claim the win.
 
With the decision, the men are now 2-4-2 on the season and will get set to face Hendrix College at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
 
The women, playing with only 12 fit field players after a rash of unfortunate injuries, hung tough with the stout Lynx squad before succombing late in the contest. The score was tied 0-0 at the half and still knotted at the 70 minute mark before the Lynx finally broke through against a leg-weary Oglethorpe defense. The Lynx went on to win, 4-0.
 
The women are now 3-3 on the season and will face Hendrix College on Salamone Field at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Petrels and Tigers Play to a Hard-Fought Tie
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team played the DePauw Tigers to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon in Greencastle, Indiana. Senior Michael Muller scored on a pass from Scott Devault and the two teams played two scoreless overtimes to record the tie.

The Stormy Petrels are now 2-3-2 on the season and will return home for a weekend series with conference rivals Rhodes (Friday at 1:00 p.m.) and Hendrix (Sunday) on Salamone Field.

Men Claim Birmingham Invitational Title
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team claimed the Birmingham-Southern Soccer Invitational this weekend by defeating Spring Hill College on Friday and earning a tie against Mississippi College earlier this afternoon.

In Friday's win over Spring Hill, the Petrels used an unrelenting offensive attack to win going away, 5-1. Senior Amel Komic led the way scoring two goals and Bryan Burnick, Michael Muller and Scott Devault each scored one goal apiece.
 
On Sunday, the Petrels got another goal from Komic and junior Danner Marsden found the back of the net as well. Mississippi College scored both of their goals on penalty kicks but Oglethorpe managed to claim the tournament title on goal-differential.
 
The Petrels are back in action this Friday night when they square off with Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Scots Rally to Knock Off Petrels
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team lost to Maryville College on Salamone Field on Saturday afternoon, 3-1. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime advantage, the Petrels could not hold off the Scots offensive output in the second half.

Oglethorpe gained the early advantage in this one as Scott Devault and Brett Wooten combined on consecutive touches to set the Petrels up for the game's first goal off the strike from Bryan Burnick in the 11th minute.

The Scots, however, used a steady offensive onslaught in the second half to equalize the game and ultimately take control on a long shot outside the box that beat Oglethorpe keeper Michael Hadjisimos. The Scots extended the lead to 3-1 late in the second half on an incredible goal that was struck "bicycle style" by Maryville's forward.
 
Oglethorpe is now 1-2 on the season and will travel to Birmingham this weekend to play in a tournament. First up will be Spring Hill College on Friday night at 5:00 p.m.

Men Can't Crack Methodist, Fall 1-0
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team lost to Methodist University at Emory on Saturday afternoon, 1-0. Despite outshooting Methodist 13-8 including 9-1 in shots-on-goal, the Petrels could not break through to claim the victory.

With the loss, Oglethorpe's record evens at 1-1 on the young season. The Petrels will be back in action this coming Saturday for their home opener versus Maryville College at 2:30 p.m.

Men Top Guilford in 2008 Opener
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team started the 2008 season in style by posting a 4-1 victory over Guilford at Emory University on Friday afternoon. The Petrels got the scoring going early as senior Division I transfer Scott Devault fed Bryan Burnick for a goal in only the game's third minute.

Oglethorpe extended the lead at the 16:54 mark of the first half when junior Italo Cardosa connected with senior Amel Komic for a goal. The Petrels widened the margin to three goals before the half when both Cardosa and Devault used nifty passing to set up junior Danner Marsden for a strike.
 
Oglethorpe concluded their scoring barage in the 59th minute when Devault scored on consecutive passes from Komic and Burnick.
 
At 1-0, the Petrels will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face Methodist at Emory University at 3:30 p.m.

Mueller Showcases Talent in Premier Developmental League
Former Oglethorpe University soccer star David Mueller has continued his soccer career by competing in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Developmental League. A defender for the St. Louis Lions, Mueller was named to the Premier Developmental League's All Conference Team for his outstanding performance in the Central Division.

Mueller Named All-Region for 4th Straight Year
Oglethorpe University senior soccer defender David Mueller was named to the Soccer Coaches Association of America All South Region Team for the fourth consecutive season. Mueller, from St. Louis, has patrolled the back line for Oglethorpe with incredible skill and determination for all his years on the pitch at Oglethorpe.

A testament to David's dedication and hard work is the fact that he has already earned his degree from Oglethorpe. In addition to being named to the All South Region squad, David was named Oglethorpe's Male Academic Athlete of the Year after compiling a stellar 3.8 GPA in addition to his outstanding play on the soccer field.
