Outlook

The 1989 season marked the first year at Oglethorpe for intercollegiate soccer competition in the women's division.  The program had had many years of success at the club level, and last year compiled an impressive 4-5 inaugural record in NCAA Division III play.

This season is the first under the guidance of Brett Teach, who previously had coached the women's team at Erskine College to second place in the 1987 NAIA National Championship.  Although the team looks much different from that squad and the Lady Petrels' crew last year, Teach sees a team with potential.

"We're going to surprise some people," said Teach.  "We have some new players, like freshmen Michelle Ponte, Lisa Rock, and Killian Edwards, who will contribute right from the start."

Leading the freshmen will be veteran players Becky Marasia and Jennifer Amerson, both seniors, and sophomore Vicky Pertierra, who will serve as the team captains.  Adding experience to the Petrel lineup, seniors Lisa DiNapoli and Amy Baggett will be working to improve upon last year's record.

The attack will be led by the dangerous senior, Jennifer Amerson, who chalked up seven goals last year to lead OU in that category.  At her side will be fellow senior Carol Payne, who scored three goals in varsity play.

Seniors Krissy Grods and Zoe Hughes, as well as sophomore Claudia Mendelsohn, return from last year's squad to add depth on the field.

After showing quick hands and a keen interest, sophomore Alicia Brumbach has nailed down the goalkeeper position

Newcomers Debby Balmes, a junior, and three sophomores, Danielle Oxford, Natasha Prather and Jennifer Flamm, will all be vying to break into the starting lineup.
