Women's Soccer
Coach Michael Lochstampfor looks forward to a 2001 women's soccer
team that will have a combination of seasoned veterans and energetic
newcomers. The majority of the team roster will consist of
juniors and sophomores. After losing only three seniors to
graduation (Jessica Hendrickson, Valerie Lane and Kylene Werner),
the Lady Petrels will rely on their experience to attempt to move to
the top of the Southern College Athletic Conference.
All-SCAC Second Team members, juniors Michelle Parks and Jaime
Wojdowski, will power the Lady Petrels on offense. Last
season, Parks (13g, 9a) ranked in the top 10 in the SCAC in three
categories; points (5th), goals (8th) and assists (5th). Along
with Wojdowski (5g, 7a), juniors April Elliott (5g, 2a) and Rachel
Newby (6g, 3a) should also provide energy to the offense.
Sophomore Heather Orth is expected to improve after an impressive
first year with seven goals and three assists.
The defense was also hurt by the loss of junior goalkeeper Heather
VanKampen. She will miss this season before returning to
Oglethorpe in the spring. Coach Lochstampfor must find a
replacement in goal from his recruits. Helping the defense
remain competitive and aggressive in the new season are juniors
Heather Orme and Katie Harrison, along with sophomore Anna Rhett
Cobb.
The Lady Petrels finished the 2000 season with an overall record of
10-7-2 and a conference record of 3-6, seventh in the SCAC.
They opened their season by blazing through the competition en route
to a 7-1-1 record. Oglethorpe's momentum was slowed after
going 2-3 in the first five matches of the conference schedule.
After picking up a victory against non-conference opponent
Ripon College, the Lady Petrels were ready to finish the second half
of their conference schedule. However, the Lady Petrels were
not as ready as they had seemed, losing three out of the last four
SCAC matches to finish with a SCAC record of 3-6.
Despite ending the season on a disappointing note, the Lady Petrels
can find positives in the 2000 season. Oglethorpe had three
players, senior Kylene Werner and sophomores Michelle Parks and
Jaime Wojdowski, make the All-SCAC Second Team. Parks finished
the season ranked in the top 10 in three categories in the SCAC
points per game (5th), goals scored per game (8th) and assists per
game (5th).
