University sponsored health insurance plan
ALL FULL-TIME DAY STUDENTS are required to have personal health insurance. To enforce this policy, all full-time day students will be enrolled in the university sponsored health insurance plan for the period 8/10/09 - 8/10/10 ; $250.00 for the base plan will be charged to their student statement. BCS Insurance Company is the provider of the university sponsored health insurance. A Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Program brochure will be mailed to all full-time students for review. The brochure is also available on the Health Services website at www.oglethorpe.edu keyword "Health Services".
Waiver of coverage
Students with health insurance can waive coverage under the university sponsored plan. To do so, students are required to return the student insurance waiver card to the address located on back of the insurance brochure or complete the online waiver at www.collegiaterisk.com (Enter "OG" and click "submit") before the deadline of September 14, 2009. For those students who enter school for the spring 2010 semester, the fee is $131.00 (1/15/10 -8/10/10) and the waiver information must be submitted by January 22, 2009. Requests for exemption after the deadline may not be honored.
If you do nothing, the cost of the insurance will be added to your student statement. Specific information can be obtained at www.collegiaterisk.com (enter "OG") or by calling 1-800-922-3420. Health Services and the Business Office CANNOT accept waivers directly.
Out-of-network fees
Students/Parents should note this health insurance coverage is not intended as a substitute for your private health insurance but as a secondary health insurance plan to cover out-of-network fees. If your personal insurance is an HMO, we suggest you check with your HMO to see how they handle out-of-network claims (for college students) and inquire if they allow guest memberships with physicians in Georgia. Please familiarize yourself or your student with your plan's limits. Many HMOs pay for treatment outside their network area only when it is an emergency and will not pay for treatment from providers out of their network area without prior permission.
Optional major medical plan
Oglethorpe is pleased to offer an optional major medical coverage plan for $350.00 (in addition to the base annual premium of $250.00). For $600.00 total, this upgraded policy includes major medical insurance with co-insurance at 80% in network and 60% out-of-network, to a $25,000 maximum benefit ($10,000 base plan + $15,000 optional major medical). With medical inflation increasing at a rate of over 12% , students face increased costs for medical care. An option to purchase major medical insurance to complement the base plan can assist students who are looking for more comprehensive coverage to protect against unforeseen medical expenses.
Intercollegiate sports athletes who are purchasing the OU student health plan are required to carry this major medical coverage to address unforeseen medical expenses. Please contact Health Services at cgrote@oglethorpe.edu to sign up for the optional major medical coverage plan.
International/Exchange Students
All International/Exchange students are encouraged to purchase or show proof of an International Health Insurance Plan. Oglethorpe University offers the HTH International Health Insurance plan. Specific information can be obtained at www.collegiaterisk.com (enter "OG" and select "products"). If International Students purchase the OU Health Insurance Plan, the additional Rep/Med Evacuation coverage is a mandatory $20.00 as is the additional major medical coverage for a total of $620.00 to address unforeseen medical expenses.
