REGARDING THE OPENING & CLOSING OF THE RESIDENCE HALLS & GREEK ROW

OPENING FOR FALL
The residence halls open for new students (freshmen and transfers) on Friday, August 21, 2015. Please report campus between the hours of 9 AM and 1:00 PM where you will check in for orientation and receive keys to your room. To learn more about orientation, please visit the First Year Experience Orientation website
The residence halls and Greek Row open for returning students on Saturday, August 22, 2015. Returning students should report to their respective residence halls to pick up their keys between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Your Resident Assistant will be available on your floor to meet with you and answer any questions you may have, so please make sure you stop by their room or meet with them on your floor. That evening you will have a mandatory floor meeting. The details for the time and location will be posted on your floor.
The residence halls and Greek Row housing will remain open for Fall Break, which is from October 19-20, 2015. Meals are provided on a limited basis during this time and you can learn more about dining availability by visiting the Dining Services website. Additionally, you should be aware of the following:
IF YOU ARE LEAVING OVER THE BREAK
- Turn off all lights and turn heater down to 55 degrees.
- Check to make sure window(s) and door(s) are closed and locked.
- Shut drapes and/or blinds.
- Unplug items that do not need to be plugged in (e.g., lamps, clocks, etc.).
- If you have a vehicle on campus and will be leaving it over the break, park it in a well lit area and do not leave belongings in the vehicle.
IF YOU ARE STAYING OVER THE BREAK
If you are staying over the break, be extra aware in your community: make sure building entries are locked, know who is staying on your floor, and as you would normally do, do not allow strangers into your living areas.
If you need staff assistance during the break, please call 404-364-8520 or come by the Residence Life Office during operational hours. When the Residence Life Office is closed, please call your Resident Assistant Duty Phone or the University Campus Safety at 404-364-1998.
The residence halls and Greek Row housing will remain open for Thanksgiving Break. Meals are not provided during the break. The last meal before Thanksgiving break will be lunch on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. The meal plan will resume with brunch on Sunday, November 29, 2015.
The residence halls and Greek Row housing will close for Winter Break at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2015 and will re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2016. All residents must be out of the residence halls and Greek Row housing during this time. If you have not made plans for Winter Break, please do so immediately, as housing will be closed during this break. Students who remain on campus during break may be subjected to fines or other disciplinary action. The last meal before Winter Break will be lunch on Friday, December 18, 2015. The meal plan will resume with brunch on Sunday, January 10, 2016. Classes for the spring semester will begin on Monday, January 11, 2016.
Preparing your room for Thanksgiving and Winter Break
Prior to your departure for both breaks, please remove any trash or food from your room. The heat should be set on low to avoid bursting the pipes. During winter break, defrost any refrigerators and unplug all appliances before you leave. Remove all valuables and any items that you think you will need during the Winter Break as you will not be permitted to return to the residence halls or Greek Row housing. If you have fish, please make sure to make arrangements for their care during the break. During the winter break, you will not have card access to the residence halls. The RA’s will be checking rooms after your departure for Winter Break to ensure compliance.
The residence halls and Greek Row housing will remain open for Spring Break which starts Saturday, March 5, 2016 and ends Sunday, March 11, 2016. Meals are not provided during the break. The last meal before Spring Break will be lunch on Friday, March 4, 2016. The meal plan will resume with dinner on Sunday, March 11, 2016.
Preparing Your Room for Spring Break
Prior to your departure for Spring Break, please make sure:
- Windows are closed, locked, and blinds are drawn
- Trash is emptied
- Perishable food discarded
- All electronics are unplugged including refrigerators (defrosting refrigerators must be left in your room, not in common areas)
- Lights are turned off
- Heat is lowered, but kept on
- All valuables removed from room
- Room/Greek House door(s) and windows are closed and locked
- There are no fire safety or Oglethorpe Policy violations present in the room

Residence Halls and Greek Row close for the spring semester at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 unless you are a graduating senior or have special permission from Residence Life to stay. All students are expected to vacate the residence halls during this time. Graduating seniors must checkout by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016. To request to stay late, you should fill out the Request to Stay Late Form. All students, including seniors and those approved to stay late, must be out of the residence halls on Sunday, May 15, 2016 by 10 a.m. No students will be allowed to stay later than this date.
If you have not already done so, please make your travel and move out arrangements. Anyone who is found to be in the residence halls without permission during this time may be subjected to disciplinary measures and/or fines.
Before you leave, please be sure to do the following:
- Sign up for a checkout appointment with your RA
- Remove all of your trash and dispose of properly
- Clean the room, bathroom, and common space
- Place the University’s furniture in its original positions
- Turn in room key to RA after checkout
The RA for your area will be checking your room upon your departure to ensure that all of your items have been removed and that your room has been locked. You MUST properly checkout with your RA or else you will face disciplinary measures and/or fines.
