The subject of political theory is one of the oldest academic topics around, yet it remains just as relevant as ever, and always fascinating to discover.

As a student in the Oglethorpe Politics major you’ll…..

  • Read important books, and write about them
  • Explore the great ideas that have shaped and influenced political thought through the ages
  • Discuss – and maybe argue – with your classmates
  • Practice analyzing a text, and advocating for an idea
  • Learn all about national and international politics, and the political process in America

Bottom line: you’ll become a better thinker, writer, and communicator. And no matter where your career takes you, these are the skills that matter most in the long term.

“I love being a Politics major at Oglethorpe! The professors are helpful and make me think more critically about our world. The other students in my major are also very sweet and help one another out when we can!”

As Georgia’s capital, and a cultural epicenter of the southeast, Atlanta is home to significant political activity – local, national, and international. Consulates for many countries are headquartered here. Students have access to major institutions like the Carter Center, the World Affairs Council of Atlanta, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and more.

  • Georgia’s legislative and governor’s intern programs offer opportunities for politics students to get a personal glimpse of the inner workings of government.
  • Students have interned with the Georgia State Legislature; the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism; the Carter Center; the ACLU; the Democratic Party of Georgia; the Israeli Consulate; the Michelle Nunn campaign; the office of State Senator Devin Barber; the National Center for Civil and Human Rights; the League of Woman Voters; and even the DEA and the FBI.
  • Oglethorpe is also affiliated with the Washington Center for Internships and the Washington Semester Program at American University. Through this partnership, Oglethorpe students have the opportunity to study politics and complete internships in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

A degree in politics is ideal preparation for careers in many fields: business, education, journalism, government, nonprofit organizations, and law. Or, the political field itself, whether that means running for office, working as a staffer or campaign manager, crafting political messaging, or covering the field as a journalist.

  • With a serious list of career credentials, our alumni include a staff attorney at the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights; a judge who sits on the Georgia Court of Appeals; a Georgia State Representative; District Counsel for the U.S. Small Business Administration; Chief Assistant Attorney for the Public Defender’s Office; and a number of partners and practicing attorneys at high-profile law firms across the country.
