Biopsychology is an interdisciplinary program that draws on biology, chemistry, and psychology to offer new insights into the science of the brain. As a biopsychology student, you’ll explore the complex relationship between the brain and behavior. You’ll delve into the intricacies of brain circuitry, learning how neurons and neurotransmitters contribute to normal and abnormal behavior. With this strong foundation, you can begin pursuing expertise in a variety of areas – studying the brain from a chemical, cellular, genetic, developmental, behavioral, cognitive, or social behavior perspective.

At Oglethorpe, all biopsychology students complete a two-course sequence in psychological statistics and research methods. With these valuable skills under your belt, you’ll be highly qualified for a career – or additional study – in a research-based field.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take a course in advanced research methods, where you’ll design and carry out your own study. It’s the perfect way to get some hands-on experience and work one-on-one with an experienced faculty member as your mentor, and maybe even present your project at a professional conference.

B.S. in Biopsychology

Asking questions. Solving problems. Turning theory into practice. The learning experience at Oglethorpe is all about making learning personal, so students have lots of opportunities to do just that.

  • Design and conduct your own study, like Patricia Groover ’15, who presented a project on personality predictors of proofreading ability at the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Nashville, TN.
  • Livia Balaban ’12 successfully completed and defended an honor’s thesis on the cognitive and linguistic skill of adolescents who had experienced a traumatic brain injury and presented it at the annual meeting of the Association for Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, an internationally attended professional conference.
  • Gain real-world experience through internships offered at Emory School of Medicine, Hudson Veterinary Hospital, and Yerkes National Primate Research Center (Emory Campus).

An undergraduate degree in biopsychology is great preparation for medical school, pharmacy school, or a graduate degree in neuroscience and psychology.

  • Along with the Allied Health pre-professional track, biopsychology offers an ideal foundation for pursing a career in the health professions – medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy and more.
