Oglethorpe University politics professor Dr. Joe Knippenberg appeared on Atlanta News First on Saturday morning to discuss the Supreme Court’s decision striking down President Donald Trump’s IEEPA tariffs. The 6–3 ruling limits the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for imposing broad import duties, a major development in national trade policy and executive authority.
During the live segment, Knippenberg joined anchor Megan Packer to offer context on the Court’s finding that the statute does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.
“I think the decision is closer than what you’re going to hear from a lot of news sources,” Knippenberg said. “The majority opinion and the dissents are very powerful and persuasive.”
The discussion highlighted the wider impact of the decision, which invalidates sweeping tariffs applied to nearly every major U.S. trading partner, including China, Canada, Mexico, the European Union, Japan, and South Korea.
