To enhance the on-campus experience for its growing commuter population, Oglethorpe University has unveiled a new lounge designed to offer students living off-campus a comfortable space to relax, study and connect between classes.
Located in the basement level of Hearst Hall, the lounge is furnished with couches, study areas, and a kitchenette equipped with a fridge, microwave and coffee maker.
The Oglethorpe community gathered earlier this week for a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring remarks from Dr. Meredith Raimondo, Vice President of Student Affairs; President Kathryn McClymond and SGA and Commuter Student Association (CSA) President David Martinez ’25.
“I want to give a special thank you to the administration for their vision and support in bringing this commuter lounge to life,” said Martinez. “This space represents not just bricks, mortar, or a foundation but a commitment to enhancing the student experience for all our commuters.”
Martinez, a founding member of CSA, has worked closely with fellow students to create a supportive commuter community by planning events that fit their unique schedules. Students who helped with the process of creating the commuter lounge include Karen Rivera, Hanan Denboba, Christian Knight, Elena Vega and Michelle Arellano-Chavez.
As a student organization, CSA has fostered connections among commuter students and partnered with other clubs to encourage broader commuter participation in university events.
More than 50% of Oglethorpe students commute to campus; the completion of this new lounge marks a significant milestone for both the club and students.
“We know that commuting can sometimes feel isolating and stressful. That is why we envisioned this lounge as a welcoming space for students at Oglethorpe. I encourage each of you to make the most of this lounge—make it a space and hub for friendships, collaborations, and creativity,” said Martinez.
Students are encouraged to share feedback about the new space and suggest future improvements.
