Biology student Chasity Cloud ’28 recently completed a highly competitive pre-dental program through the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

With a goal of becoming a dentist, this unique program fits perfectly into Cloud’s academic and career plans. Soon after learning about the opportunity from a friend, she submitted her application and a strong letter of recommendation from biology professor Dr. Karen Schmeichel

The six-week program allowed Cloud to receive hands-on clinical experience, learn from professionals across different health fields, and participate in science enrichment courses.

“Through these experiences, I learned about the different pathways within dentistry and other healthcare professions, how to become a more competitive dental school applicant, and the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in healthcare,” says Cloud.

In between sessions and lectures, Cloud was able to form friendships and professional connections with like-minded students from across the country.

Although pre-dentistry isn’t a major at Oglethorpe, Cloud has coupled her major with distinctive experiences like SHPEP to gain what she needs before applying to dental school.

“The program strengthened my academic foundation in science, which is essential for dental school. It also gave me early exposure to the dental field and helped me build skills and knowledge that align directly with my goal of becoming a dentist,” says Cloud. “SHPEP reaffirmed my passion for dentistry and gave me the tools and mentorship to continue on this path with confidence.”
