Jack Lowrie ’26 has turned his love for soccer into a career development opportunity, interning with the U.S. Soccer Federation in their advancement department over the summer.

As an advancement intern, Lowrie works on projects, like building donor lists, that support the federation’s fundraising efforts and improve their operations across the country. He also works closely with other interns and meets with staff members, gaining insight into every department and learning about different roles to understand what he wants his career path to look like.

“I’ve enjoyed meeting these people and gaining all this insight, but I’ve also enjoyed spending extra time with the other interns, attending Club World Cup matches thanks to the federation, and overall gaining a massive glimpse into the workforce,” says Lowrie. “It gets me more excited than ever to graduate and begin my career!”

Lowrie, a leader for his fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon, strives for excellence in academics and soccer as a goalkeeper for the OU Men’s Soccer team. He says his academic and extracurricular experience at Oglethorpe has prepared him for this internship.

“My motivations for doing well in the classroom translate very well to being efficient in the workplace, and I largely thank my experience at Oglethorpe for that,” says the communication studies major.

“Playing soccer also plays a major role for this job. On top of working around gamedays, travel time, practices, recovery and more, my knowledge of the game has been a large asset during my time with the federation, and I couldn’t be more blessed,” he says

Lowrie is one of two Petrels working with U.S. Soccer. Charity Cloud ’26 and Lowrie were selected for the summer internship out of 700 applicants. After hearing about the internship opportunity through a LinkedIn post and meeting with a representative from the federation at Oglethorpe, Lowrie took time between soccer games and classes to research and take notes for the internship.

“The advice I’d provide for other students looking to work in sports or gain an internship like this is to be prepared and organized,” he says. “Preparation and organization were everything for me when approaching my interviews for this role. Opportunities like this are few and far between, so put the work in, keep a positive outlook, and results will come.”

Whether it’s playing sports or working in sports, Lowrie is proving himself to be a professional who is ready to take on the workforce when he graduates next May.
