Oglethorpe’s favorable location offers students access to Atlanta for endless opportunities.
Recently, Oglethorpe University’s Student Government Association (SGA) organized a group of 15 students to volunteer at the Million Meal Pack event, hosted by State Farm Arena and the Atlanta Hawks. The students joined over 5,000 volunteers to assemble more than one million meal kits for Atlanta families facing food insecurity.
SGA President Ari Lee ’26 worked with the Office of Student Engagement to promote the event to students and figure out the logistics like catering lunch and taking MARTA into Atlanta.
“I love the idea of exercises of servant leadership. I see my role as Student Body President as a steward of the growth and development of my peers,” says the economics major.
“Service opportunities allow us to engage with people in the community and give back to the community that raised us.
I hope to facilitate many more service opportunities run by my peers with a real impact on others.”
While the SGA typically focuses on managing on-campus issues and administering budgets for student organizations, this year, the association has expressed interest in expanding community outreach efforts and subsidizing transportation for OU students to engage with the city in meaningful ways.
Abby Scott ’29, a first-year student and player on the OU women’s basketball team, participated in the event and even made new friends out of it.
“This event was so impactful for me as an OU student to serve my community and get out into the city while also working on growing my leadership skills,” said Scott.
