Oglethorpe University Theatre will kick off the new year with a time-honored classic: “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a fast-paced and heartfelt musical comedy about a middle school spelling competition.
“Spelling Bee,” which had its Broadway debut in 2005, follows a group of quirky middle school students competing for the coveted spelling championship. Guided by a group of equally quirky adult moderators, the spellers navigate the pressures of competition, the chaos of adolescence, and the joy of discovering who they are. Energetic, touching, and laugh‑out‑loud funny, the show offers audiences a charming look at growing up and finding confidence.
“‘Spelling Bee’ is very much an ensemble piece where each character is featured prominently,” says Matt Huff, associate professor of theatre. “This gives every student in the show a chance to showcase their talents and skills up front and center.”
Several lucky audience members may have the chance to showcase their talents as well. Each night, several random attendees are invited on-stage to participate in the bee and become part of the performance — adding a layer of unpredictability to an already frenetic show.
Oglethorpe’s production of “Spelling Bee” will be directed by Atlanta educator and performer Melanie Martin Long. Having taught acting at Kennesaw State University for 16 years, Long brings years of experience in helping students hone their craft and maximize their stage presence.
The Oglethorpe University Theatre production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will be on stage at The Conant Performing Arts Center beginning Feb. 20. Tickets are on sale now.
