In this installment of the “Dear…” video series, graduating senior Keimarya Rivera ’26 reads a letter to Head Women’s Basketball Coach Jasen Jonus, thanking the person who, in her final seasons with the Stormy Petrels, helped shape both her competitive edge and her confidence.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me,” writes Rivera. “From writing a letter of recommendation for a fellowship to showing up for me at the All-Star game in Virginia. I truly appreciate everything you’ve poured in to me and this program.”
Rivera’s accomplishments on the court are widely recognized. A standout forward, she capped her collegiate career with one of the most decorated seasons in program history, earning national, regional and conference honors while rewriting sections of the Oglethorpe record book.
Off the court, Rivera’s drive is equally evident. A chemistry major, she has pursued hands-on research alongside faculty mentors, applying the same persistence and problem-solving mindset that defines her play on the court.
Coach Jonus joined Oglethorpe in 2024, bringing with him a reputation for building programs grounded in accountability and player development. In Rivera, he inherited not only a high-performing athlete, but a competitor eager to learn and willing to embrace challenge. Their partnership unfolded during a pivotal stretch of Rivera’s academic and athletic career.
“Thank you so much for choosing me as your head coach. I know you’re going to do amazing things in the future, with grad school and beyond,” says Jonus. “I’m so blessed to be able to coach you and this team.”
“Once a Petrel, always a Petrel,” says Jonus.
