Engineering – Dual Degree

School for problem-solvers. In every sense of the word.

Oglethorpe offers a program that allows students to earn two degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Oglethorpe and a specialized engineering baccalaureate degree from one of our partner engineering schools, in as little as five years.

Here’s how it works:

You’ll complete your first three years (some students do this step in four years) at Oglethorpe. The curriculum brings together intriguing, mind-expanding coursework in the liberal arts and intensive foundational courses in science and math. This sets the tone for the entirety of the experience: the crucial nuts-and-bolts subjects that define the engineer’s skillset, complemented by a broad education in the liberal arts. It’s a perfect combo that turns our students into true inquisitive thinkers, and creative problem-solvers with the training to lead.

Engineering can be a challenging subject and a demanding degree, but at OU, you’ll find all the resources you need to get a strong start. You’ll find small class sizes, providing plenty of face time with teaching-centric faculty whose primary focus is on their students, plus lots of hands-on experience with sophisticated equipment during collaborative lab sessions.

With this strong foundation, you’ll go on to complete your final years at one of our partner schools: Georgia Institute of Technology or Kennesaw State University. When you successfully complete the program, you’ll be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Oglethorpe, and an engineering baccalaureate degree from the engineering school you choose to attend.

Note: each of our partner engineering schools has different entrance requirements. The math portion of the degree is also demanding, with key prerequisites for foundational courses. So if you’re interested in the Engineering Dual Degree program, it’s very important that you consult with your Oglethorpe adviser early and often. You’ve got a challenging – and rewarding – path ahead of you; luckily, we’re here to help!

  • Oglethorpe’s intellectually stimulating environment prepares our students to thrive, wherever they go on to complete their degree. Our students earn highly competitive GPAs at Georgia Tech, an extremely challenging program where students are graded on a curve.

  • Oglethorpe students can acquire real-world experience by working as an intern for BES INC. in Beaufort, SC, Cadmus Construction, or Werner Rohlfs Construction.

Oglethorpe’s robust dual-degree program equips graduates not just for a job, but for a career. At OU, you’ll become more than an astute problem-solver; you’ll also become a well-rounded, well-educated person with the broader perspective needed to flourish in a wide range of environments, so your options exponentially expand.

      • Engineering is a comprehensive field with plenty of directions a student can take, depending on aptitude and interest: aerospace, civil engineering, mechanical, biomedical, chemical, electrical, industrial, nuclear, materials science, systems engineering, robotics, and more. Plus, there are allied professions: administration, project management, communications, and lab tech.
      • Graduates can widen their opportunities by pursuing further study, enrolling in master’s and Ph.D. programs for science and engineering.
