Once you have applied to Oglethorpe and been accepted, you will automatically be considered for merit scholarship by the Admission Committee and a scholarship letter will be sent to you. If you complete the FAFSA and submit it to Oglethorpe, we will create a financial aid award package for you. The Financial Aid Award Letter is a statement of the aid (federal, institutional, state, etc.) being offered to you to study at Oglethorpe.

What to expect

After you complete the FAFSA

  • Beginning in mid-March 2024, you should be notified within 3 to 5 days with instructions on how to access an online copy of your FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS).
  • If they do not have an email address for you, you will receive a copy of the SAR in the mail within 7 to 10 days.
  • If you listed Oglethorpe University in your FAFSA, we will receive the FSS electronically as soon as it is processed.

If your financial circumstances have changed since you filed the FAFSA

  • If you have had changes in your family income or had unusual expenses after filing the FAFSA, please notify financial aid staff at [email protected].

Notification of financial aid awards

If you have been accepted to OU and financial aid application is complete, we will prepare a financial aid award package for you. This is a statement of the aid (federal, institutional, state, etc.) being offered to you for study at Oglethorpe.

For new students, financial aid is awarded beginning March 1 and typically arrives electronically through the Petrel Portal.

For returning students, financial aid is awarded shortly after commencement in May. Returning students are typically notified of their award letters via email, and the award letters are viewable online through Oasis.

Typically you will receive an email notifying you that your award letter is ready to view in your Petrel Portal. Notifications will continue on a rolling basis as we progress through the spring and summer.

For new students enrolling the spring semester, financial aid is awarded on a rolling basis and award letters typically arrive within two week so us awarding you. Typically you will receive an email notifying you that your award letter is ready to view in your Petrel Portal.

Transfer students must have submitted their official final transcripts before we can award them federal aid. 

The first thing you should do is to check your Petrel Portal and make sure you didn’t miss our email. Second, you can always reach out to the HUB and verify that we have received your FAFSA information.  

If you have had changes in your family income or had unusual expenses after filing the FAFSA, please notify the financial aid staff in the HUB.
