The Philip Weltner Library at Oglethorpe University will host a viewing of President Jimmy Carter’s funeral 11 a.m., Jan. 9, in the basement classroom Lowry 001. Light refreshments will be served.
“This is a historic moment,” said Eli Arnold, library director and university librarian. “Watching the service together as a campus community honors President Carter’s significant contributions to Georgia, our nation and the world.”
During the 1970s while serving as governor of Georgia, President Carter visited the Oglethorpe University campus as a way of highlighting education, which was one of his priorities during his term as governor.
He visited campus again in 2010 to deliver that year’s Mack A. Rikard Lecture. He was invited as part of the special year-long 175th anniversary of the university. In 2014, President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, participated in the Mentor Walk College Immersion Day through OU’s Center for Civic Engagement.
He had a personal connection to Oglethorpe through his grandson, Josh Carter. President Carter’s granddaughter-in-law, Sarah Opp Carter, graduated from OU in 2006 with an honors degree in history. She went on to earn a master’s degree in international peace and conflict resolution from American University. She and Josh are founders of the Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEO-IBD) Foundation.
