Accessibility and Accommodations
Transitioning to college is an exciting time, and Accessibility Services provides accommodations and support to ensure that students with disabilities have access to the tools they need to thrive academically.
It is recommended that students with disabilities who are admitted to Oglethorpe register with Accessibility Services during their MAP Day to get a head start on identifying accommodations and resources that will support their success.
To begin, review the information on this page, then proceed to Register for Accommodations.
The following information is designed to help you understand the processes, procedures and responsibilities involved in securing and maintaining accommodations at Oglethorpe University.
Differences between high school and college accommodations
Identification
While high school students are identified by the school districts, college students must self-identify by registering with the Accessibility Services.
Privacy
In high school, information is shared with parents/guardians.
In college, every student’s right to privacy and confidentiality is upheld.
Placement and Accommodations
In college, accommodations do not include parents/guardians.
After self-identifying, students will meet with Accessibility Services to discuss their needs and how Oglethorpe can support.
Instructor Awareness
College students will need to initiate discussion and make concerns known to their instructors, advisors and Accessibility Services.
Time Management
At college, each student is responsible for their own time management. Accessibility Services staff are here to assist with developing time management strategies for academic success.
Reminders and Deadlines
As with time management, students in college are responsible for their schedules, including knowing exam dates and assignment deadlines by referring to course syllabi.
Altering Courses and Programs
While the university will ensure students have appropriate accommodations and access, courses and programs are not fundamentally altered.
Testing and Evaluation
Once students reach college, they are responsible for any necessary disability evaluation.
