Communication students tour multi-media NPR/PBS state network

Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), an educational television and radio network, recently hosted Oglethorpe students interested in pursuing careers in communication and media.

The May 5 event was sponsored by Oglethorpe’s PRSSA chapter (Public Relations Student Society of America), advised by Dr. Kate Keib, assistant professor of communication studies.

GPB is known for its role in television and radio but is often overlooked for its contribution to Georgia classrooms. The free digital media content GPB Education provides is locally produced and covers all subject areas for every grade level K-12. Their next event on May 9, Georgia Pollinators Live Exploration, follows Georgia science standards for grades 3-8.

During their visit, students toured both radio and television studios. The GPB representatives also explained the process of putting on certain TV programs, such as Lawmakers and Football Fridays. Veronica Grimaldo ’23 was part of the group of students who attended.

“Attending the tour at Georgia Public Broadcasting was a great learning experience. I was able to see a lot of the behind the scenes of what goes on in the industry,” said Grimaldo. “It helped me envision what my life would look like if I were to pursue a career in this field.”

PRSSA is open to any Oglethorpe student. This student professional organization encourages the understanding of the current theories, principles and procedures in the practice of public relations; provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with their peers who are interested in communication professions and with professional practitioners; and encourages students to embody a professional attitude while adhering to the utmost ideals and practice of public relations.
