Oglethorpe Theatre rolls into the spotlight with ‘Xanadu’

Get ready for a roller-skating, show-stopping spectacle! Oglethorpe University Theatre proudly presents “Xanadu,” the Tony Award-nominated musical comedy that blends ’80s nostalgia with Broadway magic. This high-energy production will showcase the incredible talents of Oglethorpe’s students—on wheels!

Set to a vibrant score featuring hits by Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John, “Xanadu” tells the story of a Greek muse who descends from Mount Olympus to inspire an artist in Venice Beach, California. The result is a neon-colored whirlwind of love, laughter, and, of course, roller skates.

“This is our sincere invitation to set aside cynicism and come with us to a world where we are all welcome and where we all belong—where we might reach the greatest achievement any of us might hope for: to love someone else and create art,” says director Lauren Morris, whose experience includes work with Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, Synchronicity Theatre, and Actor’s Express.

Morris is joined by co-director Emma Jean Scott ’25, providing a unique opportunity for student leadership in the production process. The team also includes dramaturge Tatum McBride ’25, who highlights “Xanadu’s” cultural significance:

“’Xanadu’ was a reflection of the social cultures and trends at the time, combining the styles, music, and camp essence of the ’80s, one of the most eccentric eras in history. It was originally panned by the public and critics, but over time it has become a cult classic! Enjoy the little campy time capsule that this show is!”

Choreographer Precious West is bringing an exciting challenge to the cast of “Xanadu”—performing on roller skates! With a keen eye for movement and a dynamic approach to storytelling, West has been working closely with the students to ensure they not only master the choreography but also glide across the stage with confidence

Beyond the neon lights and infectious tunes, “Xanadu” is a masterclass in performance and showmanship for Oglethorpe students. From perfecting comedic timing to mastering the art of storytelling on roller skates, this production will challenge and elevate its cast, giving them real-world theatre experience that will serve them well in their careers.

Whether you are a longtime fan of the 1980 film-turned-musical or new to its roller-disco magic, “Xanadu” promises an unforgettable night of fun, laughter and heart.

“Xanadu” is on stage at the Conant Performing Arts Center Apr 4-6. Tickets are on sale here. Admission is free with Petrel Pass.
