Skills for Digital Storytelling

Get job-ready skills with access to contemporary audio and video equipment while working with OU faculty members. Our highly trained industry professionals share decades of experience in photography, sculpture, web design, journalism, public relations, visual communication, and film and media. Their specialties include camera work, lighting design, sound design, audio/video editing, scriptwriting, data analytics, producing and directing.

While working in the labs, you will exercise technical skills to combine your knowledge of the history and theory of media practice to prepare for careers in the digital media industries.

Open Lab Hours

12 – 10 p.m. Monday – Thursday

Policies

  1. Only students currently enrolled in a class that is officially scheduled in the DML or those whose names are on an officially approved DML Access Request are allowed entry into the lab.
  2. Students are only allowed access to the lab under the following circumstances:
    • Regularly scheduled class meetings
    • Open Lab Hours, which are posted in the Lab
  3. All students who wish to access the lab during open lab hours are required to show their Petrel Pass upon entering to verify course enrollment/permission to access; anyone who fails to do so will be denied entry.
    • NOTE: Students should not attempt to call Campus Security to request access to the DML. Access will be denied, and the incident will be reported to the DML Coordinator and the Provost.
  4. Food and/or drinks are not allowed in the lab.
  5. Students are not permitted to download software or alter the settings of any lab computers.
  6. Students cannot save personal files on lab computers; personal files are automatically deleted upon logout. (Students enrolled in DML Classes are required to possess their own external hard drive.)
  7. Students should bring headphones to avoid disrupting other students.
  8. Only those students who are currently enrolled in one of the Digital Photography or Graphic Design courses are allowed to use the photo printers in the DML. (However, students must always supply their own paper.)
  9. Students are not allowed to use the instructor station for any reason.
  10. Students are not allowed to access the Equipment Closet at any time. As per the posted guidelines, when students wish to check-out equipment, the DML Coordinator will facilitate check-out and will access the Equipment Closet for the student.
  11. Students should not leave anything in the DML; anything left in the DML will be thrown away.
  12. Priority for use of the lab computers will always be given to students who are enrolled in officially scheduled DML courses.
  13. The DML Coordinator has the authority to remove anyone from the lab at any time.

 

  1. Only students currently enrolled in a class that is officially scheduled in the DML or those whose names are on an officially approved DML Access Request are allowed to check-out equipment.
  2. Students will be required to present a valid Petrel Pass to check-out equipment and must sign an Equipment use Agreement Contract.
  3. Equipment will be checked out on a first come, first served basis, so students must plan accordingly.
  4. Equipment can only be checked-out during open lab hours and must be returned thirty minutes prior to the end of open lab hours on the following day (please note: equipment checked-out on Thursday or Friday must be returned on Monday at least thirty minutes prior to the end of open lab hours).
  5. All equipment will be inspected prior to check-out and again once it is returned; please be aware that fines will be applied to the responsible party’s student account for late returns or damaged or lost items.
  6. If a student fails to return the equipment by the designated due date, a $25 fine will be applied to their student account; students will be charged an additional $25 per day late fee until the equipment is returned.
  7. If the equipment is damaged or lost, the borrower will be held responsible for any repair/replacement costs incurred (damage fees = repair cost; replacement fees = current retail cost); these fees will be applied to the borrower’s student account.
  8. If the equipment is stolen while in the borrower’s possession, the borrower must notify the DML Coordinator immediately. In addition, the borrower must file a police report and submit an official receipt to verify that the report has been filed and the date on which it was filed. If the borrower fails to bring in a police report, the replacement fee (the current retail cost of the equipment) will be applied to their student account. Additionally, the borrower will lose the privilege to check out any equipment from the DML.
  9. Students must supply their own SD cards – there are no SD cards available for check-out.
  10. Priority for equipment check-out will always be given to students who are enrolled in officially scheduled DML courses.
  11. The DML Coordinator has the authority to refuse to check-out equipment to anyone at any time.
  1. All requests for access to the DML must be made by faculty or staff and must be submitted online via the DML Access Request Form.
  2. Requests must include the following information in order to be considered:
    • Full name(s) of student(s) being admitted.
    • Faculty/staff supervisor name, title, department, and Oglethorpe email address
    • Requested date(s) of admittance.
    • Brief description of the project necessitating admittance.
    • List of software/programs needed.
  3. The DML Coordinator will review all requests and then contact the applicant with a decision.
  4. Approval or denial of requests to access the DML will be based on lab availability (i.e., sizes and times of officially scheduled DML courses) and then on a first come, first served basis.
  5. Priority for use of the lab computers will always be given to students who are enrolled in officially scheduled DML courses.
