Career Development Office sets students up for success with new initiatives

Oglethorpe’s Career Development Office has continuously provided support to students through 1-on-1 advising appointments, career fairs, career-focused panels and information sessions. The office’s newest initiative, Oglethorpe Goes to Work Day, has reinforced the university’s commitment to preparing students for translating their OU education into valuable professional experience.

Designed for sophomore students, this day gives students the chance to visit Atlanta-based companies and job sites to explore career options, network, and envision what their careers could look like.

This year, sophomore students are attending sessions led by faculty and staff members to help them prepare for this year’s Oglethorpe Goes to Work Day, which will be on February 5, 2027. Each session covers a different topic, such as business professionalism and applying Oglethorpe’s Core program to real work experience. These sessions are supported by Oglethorpe Goes to Work Day ambassadors, who are standout student leaders who help prepare students for the day and accompany them on their job site visits.

“This new approach to Oglethorpe Goes to Work Day will provide students with a more intentional and comprehensive career-readiness experience,” says Director of Career Development Liz Kazungu-Emerson. “Rather than simply visiting employer sites, students will have the opportunity to first develop a stronger understanding of professionalism, workplace expectations, and how to present themselves effectively in professional environments. By connecting their academic experiences to real-world expectations, students can begin to see the value of their Oglethorpe education beyond the classroom.”

The Career Development Office is also strengthening efforts to connect students with the right career resources and information based on their class year and career pathway of interest. Students can attend panels and meet alumni aligned with Oglethorpe’s official Career Communities: Business, Finance & Entrepreneurship; Healthcare & Health Sciences; Communications, Media & Marketing; and STEM, Data & Technology.

With initiatives like Oglethorpe Goes to Work Day and Career Communities, Oglethorpe’s individualized and tailored career support meets students where they are and helps them reach their professional aspirations.
