Oglethorpe Men’s Soccer player and goalkeeper Sebastian Lewis ’29 has made an impact at both ends of the field this season, earning the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Athlete of the Week honors twice in a matter of weeks.
Lewis first earned SAA Defensive Athlete of the Week honors after returning from an early-season injury. In a 1-0 victory over Montclair State, he made 12 saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.
His second weekly honor came for a very different reason. Lewis was named SAA Offensive Athlete of the Week after scoring the first goal of his collegiate career. With less than five minutes remaining in a scoreless conference matchup, Lewis converted a penalty kick to lift the Stormy Petrels to victory.
“My coaches and teammates have pushed me to be the best I can in trainings, games and even off the field as a person,” said Lewis. “We all hold standards for each other and make sure that everyone is on track with it.”
Away from the soccer field, Lewis is a psychology major who has enjoyed exploring a variety of interests in the classroom.
“My favorite class so far is my media studies class with Dr. Lynn. Learning about the different types of media like music, television, radio and video games has been really interesting to see how they’ve evolved,” he said.
While this season has brought plenty of individual recognition, Lewis values the shared experience of being part of a college team.
“Being an athlete in college is one of the best experiences life can bring. Not only are you playing a sport that you love, but you are surrounded by a group of people who feel the same way,” he said.
