In 2020, two Oglethorpe students took on a new challenge: becoming business owners. Brainchild of Charity Cloud ’26 and Chastity Cloud ’28, DreamCloud Sleepwear LLC is a young-adult centered sleepwear and loungewear company that, thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of these two Petrels, has grown significantly over the years.
The idea for the business was inspired by the sisters’ involvement with their family’s non-profit organization, Dreams of Lois, which was founded by their mother. One of their many responsibilities included donating pajamas to children in need. Through this work, they found their passion for designing and launched DreamCloud.
As small business owners, they are hands-on in all of the design and marketing aspects. They work closely with their manufacturers and distributors, all while channeling creative ideas to cater to their mainly Gen-Z audience.
They currently have a website under works, and a Facebook and Instagram page, where customers can directly contact them to figure out their sizing and mailing information.
Learning how to keep a business running while being a full-time student presents unique challenges, Charity Cloud notes as she reflects on the lessons she has gained from her business management and Intro to Entrepreneurship class.
“It is possible to do this if you devote yourself to following certain steps, continuously learn more behind the scenes work, and the aspects that not only go into starting a business, but the running and management of it,” says Charity.
These are classes she took in her business administration major and nonprofit management minor, which have further enabled her to grow in the business and transfer useful skills.
She has also used the knowledge and the skills in her recent participation in The Achievement Pitch (TAP) business pitch competition. Sponsored by the Delta Mu Mu graduate chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., she and Sanyia Ross ’25 earned the top prize and a $2,500 investment.
Though only in her first year at Oglethorpe, Chastity Cloud appreciates the unique insight her biology major has given her, saying, “Oglethorpe has helped me in terms of background research,” she said. “Just looking up who your audience is, and the statistics of your audience is a vital expertise for bringing into your business. In addition, networking has been a key contributor to our success, as there are a lot of events to do so on campus.”
With a range of activities going on in their lives and still making time for these important passions in her life, Charity Cloud’s advice to her peers is vital.
“Oglethorpe has so many resources to help you,” Charity Cloud said, “You are making a mistake by not getting out of your dorm, going to networking opportunities and talking to your professors, even about material unrelated to the class.”
In the spirit of making time for her passions, Charity Cloud invited her former basketball teammates to participate in her non-profit work. Last year they visited the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and gave away holiday socks, winter boots and hand-made Christmas cards.
Additionally, these two sisters are part of the Oglethorpe Golf Team, a sport they have played for more than a decade. They have taken that love and passed it along to teaching young people in communities that don’t have the resources to learn the sport. They host a summer camp every year that is completely free to anyone willing to devote their time and energy.
Committed to making their community a better place, and making impacts that will last longer than them, Chastity Cloud said, “As people figure out an entrepreneurial track to choose, just know that impacting one person at a time goes a long way. Do what you love and always give back.”
