How to apply for housing
All returning students are required to tell us their housing plans for next year via the Housing Intent form in eRezLife (you can activate your account or login below). Upper-class students live in Jobe-Hansen, Bowden-Magbee, and on the first and second floors of Schmidt, Jacobs and Alumni Halls.
You have four options on the intent form: plan to live on-campus, plan to apply for an exemption, plan to live at Gables Brookhaven, or that you have completed the three-year residency requirement.
Use eRezLife to:
- Apply for housing (new and returning students)
- Submit an exemption request
- Receive your housing assignment
- Submit roommate requests
With your student ID, activate your account on eRezLife, our residence life portal.
Visit our Get Ready page to see all information about class registration and housing selection.
Oglethorpe faculty curate academic courses in a location that enhances the curriculum through immersion in an environment that deepens the connection to the material and maximizes the learning experience. Programs are promoted to students in ViaTRM and by the faculty director.
Priority Housing Selection for fall takes place in April within the eRezLife system. After that, housing selection is on a first-come, first-served basis through early May. In order to be eligible for Priority Housing Selection, you must be registered for 12+ credit hours for the fall semester and have completed your Housing Intent form by April 14. More information about roommate selection, times, and process are available on the Get Ready page and in email communications from Residence Life as we near selection.
You must complete the Exemption Request form in addition to the Housing Intent form. This form is also in eRezLife. Exemptions are granted for students who are 22+ years of age, live with a parent or guardian within 25 miles of the University, or are married. Decisions about exemption requests may take up to two weeks.
Proof of residency at Gables (i.e. a lease) will need to be submitted to Residence Life no later than July 15. Failure to provide this proof will result in automatic placement in on-campus housing wherever space permits. Residents living at Gables Brookhaven to fulfill their residency requirement will be required to purchase the Gables Meal Plan – a 150 block meal plan that can be used at the dining hall or coffee shop on campus.
First-year students and transfer students entering Fall 2024 may not live at Gables. Returning students (classes 2024-2027) may lease an apartment at Gables to fulfill the remaining two years of their on-campus residency requirement.
Please include your housing plans on your intent form for our records.
This option is available to upper-class students who mutually agree to live together and who reside in Bowden-Magbee, Jobe-Hansen, Alumni, Schmidt or Jacobs Residence Halls. Gender-neutral is defined as when there are one or more genders living together in a suite.
Oglethorpe University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its residence halls. Students who agree to the gender-neutral suite must submit a gender-neutral housing agreement to Residence Life.

Priority Housing Selection
If you want to participate in priority on-campus housing selection, you must declare your intent. All returning students must tell us their housing plans via the housing intent form. Visit the Get Ready page for everything you need to do for fall!
Who’s eligible?
Only current full-time undergraduate day students who are eligible to be registered at Oglethorpe for the following academic year are able to participate in room selection. You must not have any “holds” on your account in order to select a room. You must register for classes by the specified deadline or you may be dropped from your selected room. Visit the Get Ready page for details on these topics.
All students are required to live on campus for three years, or to commute from the primary residence of a parent or guardian. Exceptions to this rule include an approved exemption from Residence Life (forms available online in eRezLife) or a signed lease from Gables. Only returning students are eligible to live at Gables. First-year students are not eligible to live at Gables. Transfer students’ residency requirements are determined by the number of credit hours they have completed at other institutions.
Themed housing
Themed Communities allow students to live and learn with other students who share their passions. Together, residents host activities connect their academic, co-curricular, and career interests. Potential residents choose a focus for their community and identify a faculty advisor to help them develop their plan for the year. Themed Community topics may be broad or specific – for example, a community can explore a broad category like visual and performing arts or a specific topic like film. The only requirement is that residents identify a link between their community focus and the academic curriculum.
- Two newly refreshed buildings will be available to Themed Community applicants. Both buildings include a full kitchen, 3 full bathrooms, and a communal living space large enough for small events, study sessions, and gatherings. Building 1 will house a resident assistant and five members of a Themed Community in two doubles and one single room. Building 2 will house six residents in 2 double and 2 single bedrooms.
- Students will fill out an application, which can be found on their eRezLife account under the “Forms” tab. You will be required to organize a “Theme” that betters the Oglethorpe Community and aligns with the Universities academic goals. Students who are chosen for the themed communities must organize four events tailored to the members of the house as well as one event, project, or community service opportunity each semester that is open to the entire Oglethorpe community.
- Applications Open: March 3
- Application Closes: April 1
- Decisions Communicated: April 8
Residence hall agreement
All students who select a room must electronically sign a “Residence Hall Agreement.” This agreement appears as the “terms and conditions” when completing an application in eRezLife. If you do not sign an agreement, your space will not be held. Please also note that the housing contract is binding for the entire academic year. Students who wish to cancel their contract prior to the start of the academic year will be subject to a contract breakage fee. Students who wish to cancel their contract after the start of the academic year will be charged a breakage fee and will be charged a daily prorated fee of room and board charges. Students are released, without penalty, only in the case of graduation and study abroad. There is no grace period for breaking the agreement. The agreement is considered binding once completed. If you sign an agreement and fail to occupy the space while enrolled, the university reserves the right to charge you for the space. Requests to be released from the contract must be submitted, in writing, to the Director of Residence Life. The exemption approval will be determined by a special committee that meets twice per month beginning in April.
